NA body directs FIA to probe Railways corruption

LAHORE: National Assembly Public Accounts Committee’s sub committee on Railways on Saturday directed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to submit a report until April 21, on a corruption scandal in the Railways, in which scrap was stolen and sold without floating a tender. After chairing the committee’s meeting at Railways Headquarters, Committee Chairperson Member of National Assembly (MNA) Yasmin Misbahur Rehman, told the media that some Railways officials had sold the department’s scrap to Poma Trading Company without floating a proper tender. Referring to another corruption scandal, Yasmin said some Railways officials had sold the department’s scrap and Railways had to suffer a loss of Rs 500 million due to these two corruption scams. She said action would be taken against officials involved in corrupt practices. Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MNA and committee member suggested that Pakistan Steel Mills and Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) should provide Rs 35 billion to the Railways in order to improve the financial position of the department.
